Happy New Year! Yes, 2020 is finally here, there are still no flying cars, but with a new year comes a chance to do something … well, new. We’re all getting our planners together, organizing our closets, starting new diets and maybe even joining a gym. Basically, we’re trying to our collective stuff together.
For ya girl, I’m stretching myself and trying some new spots for brunch and hope you’ll join me. Now, these spots may not be new new, but some have just started brunch services or have flown so far under the radar, we’re just finding out about them. Here are some places in which their Instagrams I cannot stop looking at and drooling on the screen. So, let’s make some new brunch plans, y’all!
Junior’s – Lakeview
Junior’s, a modern America restaurant in Lakeview on Harrison Avenue, is quite a beautiful spot for brunch. Sure, they don’t have a full brunch menu yet, but their lunch items like the Junior’s Burger with a fried egg, or their crispy cornbread paired with their rather large $7 mimosas seem like the perfect brunch after a night of debauchery. And if you go on Sunday, you’ll have a lovely time listening to the massively loud church bells when they put on a show from St. Dominic next door. They’re dropping new brunch items one by one, like this honey chicken cheddar biscuit so be on the lookout on their Instagram.
Bordeaux – Uptown
Bordeaux can get lost on Magazine Street. I say this because I frequent that area of Magazine, going to brunch and it wasn’t until, like, two weeks ago that I realized that on the corner across the street from Le Bon Temps Roule, lived a quaint little French contemporary restaurant with the name Bordeaux on the building. Curious about it, I looked it up on Instagram and boom-shaka-laka, it’s now on my list of hot places to try for brunch. I cannot wait to try their full brunch menu with omelettes your way, Croque Madames, and their bottomless mimosas and bellinis for $15! Paired with live music sometimes during brunch, Bordeaux might be on the horizon as the new fancy pants brunch spot.
Gris Gris – Lower Garden District
Recently named one of the best restaurants in New Orleans, Gris Gris is another spot on Magazine I didn’t notice until I was told this was where my surprise 30th birthday party was almost held. Because they kill it with brunch! Where do we even start? With the the blueberry bourbon pan perdu? Or the shrimp and Gris Gris grits? I just might start with the Go With the Flo – crispy fried oysters, creamed spinach and a fried egg on top. Or the open faced pot roast that *fingers crossed* tastes like my grandmothers? I’m most definitely going to try most of it and wash it all down with a carafe of regular mimosa or add a little razzle dazzle of grapefruit mimosa. They’ve got a black and gold bloody mary with contains their secret recipe, but you’ll have to go there to find out what it is! (Further reading: Our review of Gris Gris)
Vyoone’s – Warehouse District
We’re heading to the Warehouse District for this next one, Vyoone’s, owned and operated by a woman bearing the same name of one of our new favorite brunch spots of 2020. Vyoone comes from a long line of Creoles and French folks in New Orleans and brings with her the french cuisine with a little modern southern feel. The one thing that stands out to me, other than the soft shell crab benedict and the pretty rose petals in their mimosas, is this really cute alleyway decorated with lights and the quaint courtyard where you can watch football games and whatnot. This place is perfect for a girls’ brunch or a birthday celebration, delivering with the food, drinks, and atmosphere!
Otra Vez – South Market District
Otra Vez calls themselves “Fun. Festive. Mexican” and from the looks of things, they get all three of those correct. Located on the ever-evolving Julia Street, Otra Vez has a brunch special for $28 that includes any entree and drink refills FOR AN HOUR of margarita, mimosas, bloody marys and Tecate. I haven’t seen anything this lovely and brilliant in a long time. Honestly, this is a challenge I’m willing to take on in 2020 (keeping it responsible, obviously). But at that price, you could get a variety of brunch entrées like the classic Mexican brunch staple huevos rancheros, breakfast tacos, and chilaquiles, or their take on the steak and egg sandwich. I don’t know about you, but I’m thinking a trip to Otra Vez is in order very VERY VERY soon. Heck, I might go ahead and make that reservation now. BRB
