The 4th of July weekend is always packed with events happening around town, many of which are related to the city’s biggest event outside of Mardi Gras, the Essence Festival. The Essence Festival is a celebration of black women, who drive pop culture, fashion, elections, and it also brings in more revenue to the our city than any other festival or event (besides Mardi Gras, of course).

All our favorites from the Black Girl Giggles crew will be serving the laughs all weekend long during their comedy festival, which consists of various shows around town from July 4-8. On Thursday night, the DJ will be spinning on the 1’s and 2’s to keep you on the dance floor all night.

If you have never had the opportunity to delight in one of Damon Young’s incredibly witty, clever and hysterical columns that cover everything from Drake issuing a “press release” in response to Pusha T to “25 questions for random white people who try to touch my baby.” Young is the editor-in-chief of VSB, but also regularly pens columns for GQ. Now he’s coming here to see if you know your trill trivia. This is not a game. OK, it is. But come ready.

The Beatles’ ‘Yellow Submarine’ Film Screening

Everyone has to recognize and respect that The Beatles changed the game when it came to music and pop culture. You’d be hard-pressed to go out right now and find a single individual of any age that doesn’t know a song from The Beatles (even if s/he didn’t know it was a Beatles song). That’s how much the legacy of this  British band endures. Yellow Submarine is an animated fantasy comedy film inspired by the music of the band debuted in 1968 and became an instant classic. See it on the big screen starting Sunday and through July 12 at The Broad Theater.

After singing along with the greats at Essence Fest, you can move to the rhythm of the Afrobeat sounds at the 3rd anniversary Afrobeat celebration for Noirlinians, a local fashion line from Denisio Truitt. DJs Chinua and Dreamer will be providing the beats and Afrodesiac will be providing the food. Prizes will be awarded for best dancer and best dressed.
