New Orleans’ Pop City owner creates t-shirt response to Melania Trump’s controversial jacket

The first lady "made a mistake. So, we wanted to correct the mistake. What she must've meant to say is that she DID care."

It took 30 seconds.

Rhonda Findley, co-owner of local Pop City & Fun Rock’n’ stores, was in Dallas with her sister shopping for new items to sell when she saw it.

Her sister saw the headlines on her phone. The first lady, Melania Trump, took a trip Thursday to visit a shelter for children who are immigrants and boarded the plane in an olive green jacket which read, “I really don’t care. Do u?” on the back.

“She put the phone in my face and said, ‘Can you believe this?'” Findley said. “We both said at the same time,’ T-shirts.'”

Findley said the decision to make a t-shirt to counter the first lady’s wardrobe’s statement of apathy took about 30 seconds.

“We were pretty much appalled by that message…It wasn’t hidden. It was clear,” Findley said.

It took about two hours for Findley to have the finished prototype for the new t-shirt completed and ready. The t-shirt is the same olive green tone as Melania Trump’s jacket and in the same white lettering and font reads, “I really do care. Do u?”

Currently, the Pop City website states that 50 percent of the profits from the sales of the t-shirts will go to Raices, a Refugee and Immigration Center in Texas currently helping to reunite immigrant parents with their child AND Catholic Charities of New Orleans Immigration and Refugee Services.

Because of the “overwhelmingly fabulous response” and demand for the t-shirts, Findley says they will be able to give the profits from the sales away to Raices and Catholic Charities of New Orleans.

“We’re going to be able to give a lot of money away to two worthy charities,” Findley said. “It is ginormous for my small business. The outpouring of love translated to the purchases of these shirts, and that makes me very hopeful.”
