#WhereTheRiverIsLow: Beginning in Lake Itasca, Minnesota the Mississippi River twist and turns in its journey throughout the United States including a distinct crescent shape that gives New Orleans its nickname, the Crescent City. Sometimes its dangerously high and sometimes it gets low revealing beaches along the riverbanks. Here a heron lands on a beach at Audubon’s Butterfly Riverview Park, nicknamed “The Fly” by locals on Thursday August 6, 2020. John James Audubon who the park is named after spent much of his time in Louisiana and New Orleans from 1821-1837. During that time his famous book with his realistic paintings was published. “The Birds of America,” book cover featured a Louisiana Heron, now know as a Tri-Colored Heron. NOTE: Swimming is not permitted in the river because of very strong currents and large ships continuously moving through the river. 📸 @MattHintonPhoto for @VeryLocalNOLA

#WhereTheRiverIsLow: A couple watches a sunset on Algiers Point the West Bank of the Crescent City of New Orleans looking at the East Bank of the French Quarter in New Orleans, Tuesday, July 21, 2020. One might be confused that the sun is setting on the East Bank of the river when the Sun always sets in the West. This confusion is because the Mississippi River makes a strong crescent-shaped turn through the city, making it one of the few rivers that flows northward for a small portion of its long southern journey from Lake Itasca, Minnesota to Louisiana and the Gulf of Mexico. In New Orleans East can be West and North can be South depending on your position to the river, which explains why it’s so hard to give compass directions in New Orleans.  NOTE: Swimming is not permitted in the river because of very strong currents and large ships continuously moving through the river. 📸 @MattHintonPhoto for @VeryLocalNOLA

#WhereTheRiverIsLow: The Steamboat Natchez passes the annual Algiers Bonfire by the Algiers Ferry Landing along the West Bank of the Mississippi River in New Orleans, Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019. The Central Business District and the French Quarter including St. Louis Cathedral could be seen across the river on the East Bank. The river was only at 9 feet during the bonfire, which is nearly half the height it was at in May 2019 when the river crested to 17.25 feet and Flood Stage. When the river was at or near flood stage all this landing area behind the river levee was completely submerged including some barricades used for the bonfire. Bonfire traditions along the river around Christmas time are meant to lead Santa Claus or Papa Noel to homes along the river. The largest bonfires occur on Christmas Eve in St. James Parish along the river levee in the towns of Gramercy, Paulina, and Lutcher. NOTE: Swimming is not permitted in the river because of very strong currents and large ships continuously moving through the river. 📸 @MattHintonPhoto for @VeryLocalNOLA
