What’s Happening (Virtually) This Week: May 4-8

As we move into our “new normal” for the next few weeks, we’re going to highlight some of the best virtual happenings! Here’s what we’re looking forward to this week:.

No need to get stir crazy or cabin fever this week! We have loads to enjoy virtually. Here’s what we’re looking forward to this week:

MONDAY, MAY 4

Taproom Yoga | 5 p.m. | Facebook | Donations accepted here.
The Taproom Yoga that normally takes place at NOLA Brewing on Monday evenings has gone virtual. All skill levels are welcome to join Elevate Yoga at 5 p.m. on Facebook Live!

504Life Telethon: Stand with New Orleans | 5:04 p.m. | Facebook | Donations accepted here.
Celebrate the 504 on 5/4 at 5:04 p.m. The livestream telethon event will feature local luminaries and stars from around the world who love New Orleans. Guests will include Mayor Cantell, Peyton, Eli and Archie Manning, Eddie Redmayne, Juvenile, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Susan Sarandon, Wendell Pierce, and dozens of other stars you had no idea loved New Orleans this much! Live Music from SideBar NOLA | Throughout the evening | Website | Donations accepted here
SideBar NOLA has live local music streaming for you seven nights a week (and oftentimes more than once per night). For a full listing of their performances, check out this page. Mondays feature Helen Gillet at 8 p.m. and the Masakowski family at 10:30 p.m.

Red Beans Monday Fundraiser | 5 p.m. | Facebook
‘Red Bean Queen’ Emily Shaya will show how she makes her award-winning red beans and rice, a family-friendly crafting session with the Krewe of Red Beans, a message from, Gov. John. Bel Edwards and cocktail recipes from Juan’s Flying Burrito.

John “Papa” Grostream: JazzFest Back Room Sessions | 8 p.m. | Facebook | Donations accepted via PayPal and Venmo.
New Orleans never wants Jazz Fest to end — even when it’s a virtual festival! John “Papa” Gros says the fest doesn’t really end until Monday night. That’s why he’s hosting this show tonight, fresh off the release of his newest album! Check out the livestream on his Facebook page.

TUESDAY, MAY 5

Rise and Vibe Live Yoga | 7 a.m. | Instagram Live Stream | Donations accepted via Venmo, Eventbrite and PayPal.
NOLA Tribe Yoga sees no reason why you can’t roll out of bed and roll out your yoga mat at the same time. Classes take place each Tuesday and are available on Instagram Live for 24 hours after the class is complete. Donations are encouraged. 

Reality-Based Leadership Webinar: What Worked & What Didn’t | 11:30 a.m. | Webinar | $10

Cooking in Quarantine is an event organized by the New Orleans Culinary & Hospitality Institute (NOCHI) every Tuesday and Thursday at 5 p.m. It’s part-cooking class, part-supper club and part-office hours where New Orleanians can hang out with NOCHI chefs and one another to talk meal prep, family cooking, culinary techniques and more!

Cyber Cinco de Mayo | 6 p.m. | Facebook | Free
Stay home and party this Tuesday with Felipe’s Cinco de Mayo Facebook live show, featuring their favorite performers from their locations in New Orleans, Naples, Fort Myers Beach and Gainesville. So pick up Felipe’s takeout (including hand-squeezed margaritas) and tune-in for this four-hour concert of mariachi, salsa, pop, rock, merengue, reggaeton, bachata and more!

For the culture: Live from the Heart of New Orleans | 7 p.m. | Instagram and Facebook Live | Donations accepted at Cashapp ($Boneghazi)
Justin Loupe of the House of Blues and his acoustic project, Handsome Phantoms are performing on Tuesday. The twice-weekly series is meant to show off the many different musical cultures that make up New Orleans’ world-famous scene. You can find the Facebook event here.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 6

Blues Bayou with Alicia “Blue Eyes” Renee | Noon | Facebook Live | Donations accepted here.
Join Alicia “Blue Eyes” Renee from her courtyard in the French Quarter every Wednesday and Saturday in May. The show starts at noon and you can find the livestream on her Facebook page.

Commander’s Palace Italian Cocktail Party | 6:30 p.m. | Zoom | $104 for two
The famous Uptown eatery is hosting a guided wine and cheese tasting with James Beard Award-nominated “wine guy” Dan Davis. This week’s event is American-themed! (USA! USA!) Buy your tickets by Monday at noon and Commander’s Palace will deliver the wine and St. James Cheese Company cheese and crackers to your door.

THURSDAY, MAY 7

Virtual Happy Hour Featuring Bill Loehfelm | 5 p.m. | Facebook | Free
Each week, the Garden District Book Shop is hosting a virtual happy hour, and this session features local author Bill Loehfelm. Bill is best known for his acclaimed fictional series about the NOPD’s rookie officer Maureen Coughlin. Here’s the event page, but you’ll find the livestream on Garden District Book Shop’s Facebook page at event time. 

The New Orleans Bounce Remix Championships | 8 p.m. | Website | Support by purchasing a gift card here.Who’s the best local bounce remix producer in New Orleans? Mannie Fresh wants to find out, which is why he’s hosting this multi-round championship series. The event begins this Monday and a new head-to-head takes place nearly every night at 8 p.m. Here’s the list of first-round competitors.

FRIDAY, MAY 8

Learn to Table-Escape with Page Goss Art | 3 p.m. | Website | Free
Many of us are away from our work desks, creating makeshift spaces on our coffee tables, dining room tables, or kitchen counters. During this YLC-sponsored event, Page Goss will walk us through creating a table-escape, making one of our most functional home pieces into a functional, beautiful place to escape.

Virtual Friday Night Flights | 6 p.m. | Facebook | $30
NOLA Brewing is hosting weekly virtual flight tastings. This week’s focus is on funky beers. You can buy your beers (meant for two people, but works for between one and four individuals) in advance. You can also purchase a cheese pairing, as well! You’ll need to pick up your order curbside at the brewery, and then keep an eye on the brewery’s Facebook page for the Facebook Live link.

Cameron and Michael LIVE! | 6 p.m. | Facebook | Donations accepted via PayPal and Venmo.
Cameron and Michael of The Cajun Troubadours play on their Mid-City porch, armed with an accordion, a guitar, beers, jokes and lots of tunes! You’ll find the live stream to their lively virtual show here on Friday evening.

Mannie Fresh | 7 p.m. | Facebook | Free, but gift cards to support The Maison and its staff can be purchased here.
Famous local DJ, Mannie Fresh hosts a popular DJ set (more than 10,000 viewers!) called “Virus-Killaz” each Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m. Check out his Facebook page for more information as the date gets closer.

Ellis Marsalis Tribute Night | 8 p.m. | Facebook | Free
Every week Snug Harbor has a tribute show to the recently departed New Orleans music legend, Ellis Marsalis, Jr. Swing by their Facebook page at approximately 8 p.m. and they’ll post the link to the show. 

Freaky Fridays | 8 p.m. | Facebook | Free
James Corbyn is a ghost hunter, Voodoo practitioner, historian, storyteller and collector of haunted artifacts. Each Friday he hosts a Facebook Live about another haunted topic. Last session was about the New Orleans Axeman murders. This week’s? Swing by their Facebook event to find out!

Big Freedia’s Friday Night Shakedown | 9 p.m. | Instagram and Facebook | Donated accepted for Big Freedia’s Touring Crew and GNOF’s Disaster Relief Fund
