Concert Roundup: Get out of the NFC funk with some live music this week

We have costume-making and Carnival-planning to do. Who has time to wallow?

by Alex Galbraith | January 21, 2019

We all know what happened. It sucked, we hate it and there’s at least one zebra who will adorn effigies and dartboards until we make it to the Super Bowl (next year). But luckily, we aren’t Green Bay or Cleveland. We have more than sports fandom and misery to pass the time.  We have costume-making and Carnival-planning to do. Who has time to wallow?

In the short-term, we know it hurts. So, we’ve come up with a nice list of shows to get your mind off of the Superdome Screwjob for a little while. We have the rest of our lives to be haunted, why not spend this week dancing?

Young Dolph

Young Dolph makes street anthems with a bit of bounce and a lot of humor. Where many grim gangsta tales can’t bother to let a little bit of light in, Dolph peppers his gun talk with more human moments. We are talking about the guy who made a mixtape called Rich Crack Baby featuring a flossy fetus as cover art.

Stevie B

This Latin freestyle legend is bringing classics like “I Wanna Be The One” and “Because I Love You” to the Southport Hall. If you need to sweat away your sorrows, don’t miss a chance to throw yourself around to the dance-floor hits of yesteryear.

Lake Street Dive

Confession time: this pseudo-retro schtick has never worked for me. It lacks the earnestness of the era that is being emulated. It feels hollow and calculated. But I can’t deny that the group has its fans, and in a crowd, good musicianship, a big voice and a beat to dance to are enough.

Joyce Manor, Jeff Rosenstock & Remember Sports

While we’re sharing, I’m going to this show for the band that’s so far down the bill their name is misspelled on the venue’s website. Remember Sports released two absolutely perfect albums before a soft breakup a few years ago. I never saw them the first time around and I’m geeked they are back.

Jeff Rosenstock only released one of the most crucial albums of 2018 in Post-, and Joyce Manor has hooks for days, so the full lineup is more than worth the price of admission.

New Orleans Standard Time

Close out the week with a slice of what makes New Orleans so special. NOST is a rotating cast of musicians who work their way through the city’s jazz standards. That it’s in the lowbrow, high-class confines of The Drifter only helps the mood.
