Treat Yo’ Self: All The New Places To Get Dessert In New Orleans

New Orleans is awash in new cupcake, ice cream and cookie shops.

New Orleans isn’t exactly wanting for sweets. We’re world renowned for a dish that’s literally just nuts in a ton of sugar and cream. We have an entire crazed season based around a type of cake (and we go a little overboard to make sure we get it from our favorite bakery). We turned a cocktail we invented into a slushee and called them both the same thing and nobody even thinks twice about it.

In short, we know from dessert. But that doesn’t mean we’re opposed to it getting a little easier to indulge a sweet tooth around here. The past several months have seen a wave of new and upcoming desert spots around the city and, with the recent announcement of a Cookie Dough Bliss coming to Lakeview, we figured it’s a perfect time to run them all back.

Freezy Street – New Orleans East

The rolled ice-cream joint on St. Claude Ave. is always hopping, with fans braving long lines for tasty treats. To ease the pressure a bit and celebrate the first outpost’s unquestionable success, Freezy Street launched a second location in New Orleans East back in May.

Cupcake Collection

This chain selling delicious, no-frills cupcakes was founded by a New Orleanian. But it took a while (nearly eight years) for Mignon Francois to bring her baby back home. The Magazine Street outpost of this confection carrier launched on June 3.

Wink’s

This Gentilly spot is primarily a full restaurant serving affordable plates. But with famed baker-turned-actor Dwight Henry at the helm, you know there’s going to be buttermilk drops.

The baker’s donut-like drops became famous during his time at the 7th Ward bakery of the same name and he’s not going to put them aside even as he moves into heartier grub.

Insomnia Cookies

The late-night sweet sellers will open their first NOLA shop in the very near future. The cafe will serve hungry students out of the old Maple Street Book Shop.

Cookie Dough Bliss

The ready-to-eat cookie dough chain is coming to an already sweets-heavy part of Harrison Avenue in mid-November, according to Eater.

King Cake Hub

Pizza NOLA‘s former owners are planning a one-stop shop for all of the city’s king cake needs. Look for it (when else?) next Carnival season.
